However, if the chicken is improperly stored, even during transportation, then the bacteria may begin to multiply at a faster rate. This drastically reduces the shelf life of the chicken.
So, it is possible that you may pick up a chicken at a store that has already begun to go bad.

If you are going grocery shopping, then make sure to pick up the poultry products last of all. This should be done right before you are headed home and should be the last thing that is thrown into your shopping car.
You can find an insulated bag at the store. And although it can seem like a bit of an investment, I would suggest that you make it. These bags are great for maintaining chicken at a cold temperature and preventing it from going bad.
If you live far away or if you are transporting chicken in the summertime, I would suggest placing a few ice packs inside the bag to keep the temperature low.
Never leave the chicken out on the countertop – this goes for cooked chicken as well. It should always be kept in the fridge immediately after you come home.
In case you will not be cooking the chicken within the next few days, place the chicken in the freezer instead.

The easiest way to determine if the chicken has gone bad is to take a whiff of the meat. Spoiled chicken smells bad, sour, or off. Fresh chicken, on the other hand, has almost no smell to it.
You could also run your finger along the surface of the chicken. Does it slimy to you? Or, perhaps there is some tackiness to it? These are signs that the chicken has gone bad.
Fresh raw chicken will be pink. If you notice that it is grey or brown or there are green tinges to it, then this means that the meat has gone bad.
Keep in mind that these signs will not always be there. So, now that you know how long is chicken good for after the sell by date, I would make it a point not to eat chicken past this point.
You can store the chicken in the fridge for up to two days after the sell by date. If you can’t use up the chicken by then, you need to freeze it. Here is how to do that:
Place the chicken in good quality freezer bags. Alternatively, you can also wrap them up in plastic wrap or freezer paper. An airtight container can also be used. Personally, I prefer the bags, though.
If you are using the bags, make sure to squeeze out all the air from the bags after arranging the chicken inside. This prevents freezer burn. Then, seal the bag and place the vacuum sealed chicken in the freezer.
In case you are wrapping the chicken in any other kind of material, make sure to wrap them very tightly.

Now, in the freezer, a whole chicken can be good for up to 1 year. Parts can be kept for up to 9 months before going.
As for the frozen cooked chicken, it is good for up to 4 months.
I don’t like to keep my meat frozen for this long as I do feel that there is a loss in flavor and texture – especially cooked chicken. I typically like to use them up within a couple of months after freezing.
In any case, make sure to mark the date of freezing on the packaging. This will let you know when to use it.
It isn’t just about storing chicken past the sell by date properly. It is also important that you defrost the meat properly too.
The best option is to leave the chicken in the fridge until it is completely defrosted. However, this process can take well over a day.
To speed things up, place the chicken in a bowl with cold water, still in its original packaging. Let the chicken sit there for 30 minutes and then empty out the water. Replenish the cold water in the bowl and repeat this process every half an hour until the chicken is thawed out.
You can’t use this method with cooked chicken. So, you will simply have to keep the chicken in the refrigerator until it is done.
Whatever you do, never leave the raw or cooked chicken out on the countertop for more than an hour. This can lead to food poisoning.
